The Wet Tropics catchment is a particular hotspot for nutrient and pesticide run-off due to the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>9 short sharp rivers<\/li>\n<li>exceptionally high rainfall<\/li>\n<li>intensive farming along the coastal plain<\/li>\n<li>closeness of the reef to our coast<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1579040749315{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}&#8221;]Each year our wet season dumps rain into our landscapes which races down the escarpments, picking up pollutants along the way and carrying them out to sea without little chance to dilute.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1597902432565{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}&#8221;]Terrain NRM has successfully delivered a number of large Great Barrier Reef programs that have been funded by the Australian and Queensland governments. These programs have mostly been focused on working with farmers to help them transition to farm practices that present a lower risk to water quality flowing to the Reef but also maintain farm productivity and profitability.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1597054919845{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}&#8221;]<strong>Our work involves:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Supporting farmers to transition to more environmentally sustainable practices<\/li>\n<li>Water quality monitoring<\/li>\n<li>Trialling innovations including treatment systems like bioreactors<\/li>\n<li>Repairing riverbanks, gullies and landscapes to reduce sediment runoff and maintain farm productivity<\/li>\n<li>Developing innovative ecosystem service markets to incentivise and reward landholders to reduce nutrient and sediment runoff to the reef<\/li>\n<li>Raising community awareness about links between farm practice and reef health<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1594345051795{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}&#8221;]<strong>Current reef projects:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How do we support cane farmers to transition to environmentally sustainable farm practices?<br \/>\nGBRF RAP2 \u2013 An extension program delivered through the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wtsip.org.au\/\">Wet Tropics Sugar Industry Partnership<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>How do we incentivise cane farmers to reduce their use of nitrogen fertiliser?<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/terrain.org.au\/repeated-tenders\/\">Reef Trust IV Repeated Tenders<\/a><\/li>\n<li>How do we fix sediment runoff caused by historic grazing practices?<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/terrain.org.au\/herbert-gully\/\">Reef Trust IV Herbert Gully &amp; Streambank Repair Project<\/a><\/li>\n<li>A place-based approach: Bridging the Gap Between Science and the Farmers<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/terrain.org.au\/major-integrated-project\/\">Wet Tropics Major Integrated Project (MIP)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>How do we track progress towards the Reef 2050 targets? We have successfully delivered several large government-funded projects that are focused on helping farmers change to priority farming practices with a low water quality
