It is the only place with two interconnected World Heritage Areas &#8211; the world\u2019s oldest continuously living rainforest and the 8,000 year old Great Barrier Reef. OUR REGIONAL PRIORITIES<\/strong><\/h4>\n[\/vc_column_text][mk_padding_divider size=&#8221;5&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1730168566074{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}&#8221;]\n<div id=\"padding-30\" class=\"mk-padding-divider clearfix\"><\/div>\n<h5>SPECTACLED FLYING FOX<\/h5>\n<p>Listed as critically endangered and in rapid decline after heatwaves caused mass deaths in 2018, the spectacled flying fox has enormous ecological importance as a long distance rainforest pollinator. They are essential for the survival of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Rainforests.<\/p>\n<h5>NORTHERN BETTONG<\/h5>\n<p>Listed as endangered, there are only two known populations in existence and they are in decline. They live in open Eucalyptus forest in the Mareeba area.<\/p>\n<h5>CASSOWARY<\/h5>\n<p>Listed as endangered, these large flightless birds are an iconic umbrella species only found in Far North Queensland\u00a0 \u2013 in the Wet Tropics and Cape York regions. The extent, condition and connectivity of their habitat has been significantly reduced by development. The leading recorded cause of cassowary deaths is vehicle strikes.<\/p>\n<h5>MAHOGANY GLIDER<\/h5>\n<p>The last population estimate of this endangered gliding possum was 1500 to 2000. Less than half of its original habitat in a small pocket south of Cardwell remains, and it is badly fragmented. Protecting this habitat and establishing wildlife corridors is critical to the survival of mahogany gliders.<\/p>\n<div id=\"padding-30\" class=\"mk-padding-divider clearfix\"><\/div>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1562829793767{padding-right: 0px !important;padding-left: 30px !important;}&#8221;][mk_padding_divider size=&#8221;55&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1720133471936{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}&#8221;]\n<h4><strong>THREATENED ECOLOGICAL COMMUNITIES\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n[\/vc_column_text][mk_padding_divider size=&#8221;55&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1776816724496{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}&#8221;]\n<div class=\" vc_custom_1597367690632\">\n<div id=\"text-block-35\" class=\"mk-text-block \">\n<div class=\" vc_custom_1576129970906\">\n<div id=\"text-block-37\" class=\"mk-text-block terrain-head\">\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/terrain.org.au\/mabi-forest\/\">MABI RAINFOREST<\/a><\/h5>\n<div class=\"clearboth\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" vc_custom_1578541725557\">\n<div id=\"text-block-38\" class=\"mk-text-block \">\n<p>Mabi forest is a critically endangered rainforest ecological community. It is only found in North Queensland. Just four per cent of the original forest remains, with the largest areas in the Wet Tropics\u2019 Curtain Figtree National Park and Wongabel State Forest on the Atherton Tablelands. Mabi forest is highly fragmented, and 41% is on freehold land.<\/p>\n<div class=\"clearboth\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" vc_custom_1576130023881\">\n<div id=\"text-block-39\" class=\"mk-text-block terrain-head\">\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/terrain.org.au\/littoral-rainforest\/\">LITTORAL RAINFOREST<\/a><\/h5>\n<div class=\"clearboth\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" vc_custom_1578360959496\">\n<div id=\"text-block-40\" class=\"mk-text-block \">\n<p>Littoral rainforest is also a critically endangered ecological community. This rainforest grows right on the coast, and faces pressure from both directions through coastal development as well as coastal erosion and inundation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"clearboth\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" vc_custom_1576800184177\">\n<div id=\"text-block-41\" class=\"mk-text-block terrain-head\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" vc_custom_1578360982361\">\n<div id=\"text-block-42\" class=\"mk-text-block \">\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/terrain.org.au\/broad-leaf-tea-tree-woodlands\/\">BROAD LEAF TEA TREE<\/a><\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Broad-leafed tea tree is listed as an endangered ecological community. It grows in the high-rainfall area of coastal North Queensland, and the Wet Tropics region is home to just over 30 per cent of remaining woodlands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/terrain.org.au\/lowland-tropical-rainforest\/\">LOWLAND TROPICAL RAINFOREST<\/a><\/h5>\n<p>Listed as a threatened ecological community in 2021, lowland tropical rainforest occurs below 100m elevation between Cooktown and Ingham.
