What is hiptage?<\/h4>\n

Hiptage is an invasive weed that\u2019s smothering rainforest north of Cairns \u2013 and this vine from eastern India and south-east Asia grows so well in the Wet Tropics region that its sheer weight can bring down trees.<\/p>\n

Work crews from Douglas Shire Council and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service have been targeting the species for almost two decades, with council crews recently extending into new territory for this project thanks to funding from natural resource management organisation Terrain NRM.<\/p>\n

Douglas Shire\u2019s Biosecurity Team Leader Brad Everett said crews were hiking up rainforest gullies on a hill known as \u2018ground zero\u2019. They take chainsaws, hand saws, secateurs and knapsack sprayers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard work. The whole north side of Butcher\u2019s Hill is infested,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cBut it\u2019s rewarding work too. We had spots we\u2019d take people, to show them just how bad hiptage gets, where the vine was almost impenetrable.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow we go back in there for follow-up work on a biannual basis and there are a few vines and seedlings. The native forest is getting a chance to regenerate and self-seed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Where is hiptage found?<\/h4>\n

Hiptage exists in a 60-hectare section of the Mossman River catchment, with Tara Hills identified as the core infestation area and the gateway for Mossman Gorge National Park infestations.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″ css=”.vc_custom_1563789122720{padding-right: 0px !important;padding-left: 34px !important;}” el_class=”great_header_right”][mk_padding_divider size=”206″ visibility=”hidden-sm”][mk_padding_divider size=”50″ visibility=”hidden-sm”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1646116109551{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\"\"[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1646178341870{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Crews have recently tackled a six-hectare area on the east side of Butcher\u2019s Hill.<\/p>\n

Working with local councils<\/h4>\n

Terrain NRM\u2019s Chelsy Maloney said the project was part of a \u2018Native Vegetation \u2013 Many Hands Make Light Work\u2019 program funded by the Queensland Government\u2019s Natural Resources Investment Program. Terrain is also working with the Cassowary Coast Regional Council and Tablelands Regional Council.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur goal is to improve the resilience of big patches of native vegetation,\u2019\u2019 she said. \u201cThis project brought together councils from across the region to decide on priority areas where we can make measurable improvements over several years through on-ground works.\u201d<\/p>\n
